Bride and groom in wedding attire relax on a bed with champagne glasses. Black and white setting, elegant and celebratory mood.

When it comes to planning a wedding, there’s one thing couples consistently say matters most capturing the real, authentic emotions of the day. That’s not just about beautiful venues or curated Pinterest boards. It’s about moments: stolen glances, teary vows, spontaneous laughter. And according to recent research we conducted with engaged and newlywed couples, personality and connection with the photographer and comfort in front of the camera was one of the top priorities when choosing a wedding photographer.

Let’s talk about two big things:

  1. How to feel relaxed and confident on camera, and

  2. Why your wedding photos are more than just images, they’re an heirloom.

1. Getting Comfortable in Front of the Camera

"We just want to look like us, but not awkward."

That was the most common sentiment we heard. The truth is, most couples aren’t models and you don’t need to be. If you feel this way, you are not alone. 9/10 of couples we photographer have the same concerns. Feeling at ease on your wedding day starts long before the camera comes out. Here’s how:

• Get to Know Your Photographer

It sounds simple, but chemistry matters. Schedule a booking call before you commit, you need to be sure you could trust that person on your day and you trust that they will align with your vision. Feeling familiar with your photographer’s presence and communication style makes it easier to let your guard down.

• Embrace the Candid

The best photos often come when you’re not trying. Trust your photographer to capture those off guard moments. Focus on each other and immerse yourself in your day. When the day arrives, you won’t have time to worry about the camera!

• Choose a Photographer Who Guides Gently

Our research showed that couples valued photographers who could direct subtly, without disrupting the flow of the day. Look for someone who knows how to read the room and offer just the right amount of encouragement and guidance where support is required. Most photographers will aim to take a fly on the wall approach to your coverage. Although they wouldn't be afraid to give direction and guidance in the moments that require it.

• Experienced photographers cost more, and there’s a good reason for it

Sticking to your budget is important, but so is knowing what you're paying for. A photographer who's shot hundreds of weddings brings experience, confidence, and knows how to handle anything the day throws at them. You're not just paying for a few hours of photos; you're paying for their skill, editing time after the wedding, and the peace of mind that your memories are in good hands.

2. Why Wedding Photos will stand the test of time

You’ve heard it before, but it’s worth repeating: your wedding day goes by in a blur. The cake gets eaten, the flowers fade, but your photos? They become family heirlooms.

• You never regret investing in a photographer when you love your photos

Everyone has a budget, and it’s important to manage it wisely. But speaking from experience (we're married!), wedding photography was something we priortised (even though this is our career). We knew that if we took the time to research and connect with the right photographer, someone who truly understood us, we wouldn’t regret the decision. And we were right. The investment was absolutely worth it for photos we genuinely love and will treasure for a lifetime.

The Real Secret to Great Photos

It’s not about looking perfect. It’s about feeling something real.

Find a photographer who sees you, who understands your vision, who has been in communication with you in the lead up to your wedding, who is invested in your day and who helps you feel like yourselves in front of the camera. Because when you’re relaxed, connected, and present thats when you know that you made the right choice!
